Moscow Hopes Syrian Kurds, Damascus to Reach Mutual Understanding - Ministry

Moscow hopes that Syrian Kurds and the authorities in Damascus will reach mutual understanding given that the two sides are maintaining contacts, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin told Sputnik in an interview.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th October, 2018) Moscow hopes that Syrian Kurds and the authorities in Damascus will reach mutual understanding given that the two sides are maintaining contacts, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin told Sputnik in an interview.

"As far as I know, there are some contacts between the Kurds and Damascus, and we would like some mutual understanding to have been reached," Vershinin said.

On Thursday, Sinam Mohamad, the head of the US Mission of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), which is the political wing of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), told Sputnik that the SDF were hopeful to revive a dialogue with Damascus and against any military solutions. According to Mohamad, the SDC also wants to participate in the Geneva talks on Syria and be part of the constitutional commission.

The SDF and authorities in Damascus held several round of talks and discussed the issue of Kurdish self-government.

The Syrian Kurds announced the creation of the Federal region of Rojava in northeastern Syria in 2016, with Damascus saying the move had no legal power. Later that same year, the region was renamed to the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria. In late September 2017, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said Damascus was ready to discuss the issue of the Syrian Kurds' self-determination once the fight against the Islamic State (IS, banned in Russia) was over.
