Italy to Continue Maintaining Regular Contacts With Russia Despite EU Sanctions - Embassy

Even though Rome is not able to unilaterally lift the sanctions imposed on Moscow by the European Union, it aims to continue regular contacts with Russia, Trade and Economic Adviser of the Italian Embassy in Moscow said on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th October, 2018) Even though Rome is not able to unilaterally lift the sanctions imposed on Moscow by the European Union, it aims to continue regular contacts with Russia, Trade and Economic Adviser of the Italian Embassy in Moscow said on Thursday.

"Sanctions, as you know, cannot be lifted unilaterally. They were introduced under the consent of countries that are part of the European Union. Therefore, this issue should be raised at the EU level ... Our government has officially committed itself to tackling the issue of sanctions and is now mainly engaging in dialogue through a process of constant contacts and visits," Niccolo Fontana said at a press conference at the Rossiya Segodnya Media Center in Moscow.

Rome aims to further promote dialogue with Moscow in political, economic and financial spheres, the official noted.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said in June that Italy would promote the revision of anti-Russia sanctions, saying that Moscow had played a major role in resolving geopolitical crises in recent years. The new Italian government, which was formed in late May by a coalition comprising the anti-establishment Five Star Movement and the Euroceptic Lega party, stated the need to lift the EU sanctions imposed on Russia in their government coalition agreement.
