Russia to Abide by Commitments Under Paris Climate Agreement - Putin

Russia will strictly adhere to its commitments under the Paris Agreement on climate change, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd October, 2018) Russia will strictly adhere to its commitments under the Paris Agreement on climate change, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday.

"We have signed the Paris Agreement, we have assumed those obligations. We have fulfilled all [our commitments] within the first stage of the Kyoto Protocol. Now the Paris agreements are replacing the Kyoto agreements. We have assumed all the necessary obligations and will strictly adhere to them," Putin said during the Russian Energy Week (REW) forum's plenary session, asked about the possibility of a decreased use of coal use in Russia.

The Russian president added that some countries produced far more harmful atmospheric emissions than Russia did.

"The United States, namely. There are many such countries in Asia. So we are not the leaders in this respect, we are selling a lot of coal, but not the most. We sell things that are being bought globally. It's not about us, it's about the modern technologies that this or that Primary energetic resource uses," Putin explained.

The Paris Agreement, signed by more than 190 countries, aims to limit the rise in average global temperatures to less than two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels in order to reduce the risks of climate change. The document was adopted within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in December 2015 and came into force in November 2016. It replaced the 1997 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change's Kyoto Protocol.

The REW, which aims to promote international energy cooperation, started earlier on Wednesday and will last through Saturday. The Rossiya Segodnya International news Agency is a media partner of the event.
