US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi during a meeting that he sees some movement advancing the peace process in Afghanistan and thinks that Pakistan can play a large role in a negotiated settlement, the Department of State said in a press release on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd October, 2018) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi during a meeting that he sees some movement advancing the peace process in Afghanistan and thinks that Pakistan can play a large role in a negotiated settlement, the Department of State said in a press release on Wednesday.

"Secretary Pompeo met yesterday with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi," the release said. "Secretary Pompeo emphasized the important role Pakistan could play in bringing about a negotiated settlement in Afghanistan. The Secretary agreed that there was momentum to advance the Afghan peace process, and that the Afghan Taliban should seize the opportunity for dialogue."

The release said the two diplomats also discussed the importance of working together to advance joint US-Pakistani priorities and to provide stability in South Asia.

Pompeo and Qureshi's meeting on Tuesday followed up on discussions the two officials had during discussions in Islamabad on September 5, and both pledged to maintain constructive dialogue.
