France's former Prime Minister Manuel Valls, who has announced his intention to run in the mayoral race next May in his Spanish home city of Barcelona, said on Tuesday he had submitted a letter of resignation to the French parliament's lower house.

"I thanked [National Assembly President Richard Ferrand] and submitted my resignation letter which will take effect on October 3," Valls said on Twitter.
Valls said he would run in the mayoral election as an independent candidate on September 25.
The politician served as French prime minister between March 2014 and December 2016 and represented the department of Essonne in the French parliament.
