IMF Personnel to Provide Assistance for Indonesian Relief Efforts - Lagarde

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will hold an internal fundraising drive among agency staff and management for Red Cross earthquake and tsunami relief, Managing Director Christine Lagarde said in a speech on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st October, 2018) The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will hold an internal fundraising drive among agency staff and management for Red Cross earthquake and tsunami relief, Managing Director Christine Lagarde said in a speech on Monday.

"Everybody from staff and from the executive board will be matched 100 percent by the IMF itself and I hope we can also participate - just us as a community, and whether Indonesia asks for it or not," Lagarde said.

The death toll from Friday's quake and tsunami on the Indonesian community of Palu and nearby portions of Sulawesi rose to more than 800 people on Monday, with casualties expected to rise as rescuers continue searching for survivors.

Lagarde said the IMF would offer its help even though Indonesia has the resources and budgetary means to deal with the latest natural disaster in the quake-prone archipelago.

Legarde's speech to IMF staff in Washington was billed as curtain raiser to annual meetings in Bali next week, about 600 miles away from Sulawesi.

Last month, the agency held a similar fundraising drive for victims of twin earthquakes that killed hundreds on Lombok, according to Lagarde.
