May Pledges Government Backing For Joint UK-Irish 2030 FIFA World Cup Bid

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th September, 2018) The UK government is ready to support the joint UK-Irish bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2030 if local football associations decide to submit it, UK Prime Minister Theresa May said.

"Following the excitement of this Summer's World Cup, the English FA [Footbal Association] are working together with the FAs of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland to explore whether there could be a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup ... The decision on whether to bid is, of course, for the football associations to make. But if they decide to go forward, they can count on this government's full support," May said on Friday as quoted by the Belfast Telegraph newspaper.

The United Kingdom and Ireland have hosted multiple international sporting events. Moreover, in 2020, the UEFA European Football Championship will be held in the United Kingdom.

Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay are among the states, planning to bid for hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The three South American states are planning to submit the joint bid and expect the "historical justice to be served" because 2030 will mark the 100th anniversary of the first ever world football tournament that was held in South America.
