Uber Settles Charge Of Hiding Massive Data Theft For $148Mln - US Attorney General

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th September, 2018) The ride sharing service Uber has settled a lawsuit with 50 US states and Washington, DC for hiding a hack that exposed personal information of 57 million people, New York state Attorney General Barbara Underwood said in a press release.

"As part of the nationwide settlement, Uber has agreed to pay a record penalty of $148 million to the states," the release said on Wednesday.

In November 2016, hackers based in the United States and Canada secretly informed Uber that they had downloaded the personal information of 57 million riders and drivers, 25 million of whom were in the United States and 7.7 million of whom were drivers, the release explained.

Uber later paid the hackers a ransom of $100,000 to delete the data, but did not publicly disclose the hack until a year after the company was first notified, the release noted.
