Mattis Says Sees No Indication Iran Wants to Block Strait of Hormuz

US Secretary of Defense James Mattis said on Wednesday that he sees no indication that Iran wants to block the Strait of Hormuz.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th September, 2018) US Secretary of Defense James Mattis said on Wednesday that he sees no indication that Iran wants to block the Strait of Hormuz.

Mattis responded, "No," when asked by a reporter whether he had seen any indication that Iran intended to block the Strait of Hormuz.

On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned during a speech at the United Against Nuclear Iran Summit in New York that the United States would not tolerate Iranian dominance of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow stretch of water between the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, is considered one of the world's most important choke points for world oil supplies. More than 18 million barrels of oil pass through the narrow waterway each day, accounting for 30 percent of the world's oil shipments by sea, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
