Moldovan Parliament Speaker to Appoint 2 Ministers Instead of President - Statement

Moldovan Parliament Speaker Andrian Kandu will on Tuesday sign, instead of country's President Igor Dodon, decrees on the appointment of two ministers, the parliament's press service said in a statement.

CHISINAU (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th September, 2018) Moldovan Parliament Speaker Andrian Kandu will on Tuesday sign, instead of country's President Igor Dodon, decrees on the appointment of two ministers, the parliament's press service said in a statement.

On Monday, the Moldovan Constitutional Court ruled that the speaker of the parliament could appoint two members of the government instead of Dodon, thus temporarily suspending the latter on this issue.

"The appointed ministers will take an oath today. The decrees will be signed by the parliament's speaker, Andrian Kandu, who temporarily acts as the president of the country," the statement said.

The signing ceremony is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (13:00 GMT).

Silvia Radu and Nicolae Ciubuc were proposed by Moldovan Prime Minister Pavel Filip as candidates for ministers of health and agriculture respectively. The candidacies were not supported by Dodon, who believes that Radu lacked relevant education and work experience as well as suspecting Ciubuc of being corrupt.

During his presidency, Dodon has been temporarily suspended three times, with two of the suspensions occurring because he refused to approve candidates for ministerial posts proposed by the government. In both cases, the ministers were appointed by Candu.

Since his election as Moldova's president in late 2016, Dodon has had sharp differences with the parliament, which is controlled by opposing political forces.
