United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday that he is committed to reforming the world body in order to make it more effective and capable of responding to current global challenges.

"Today, as guardians of the common good, we also have a duty to promote and support a reformed, reinvigorated and strengthened multilateral system," Guterres said.
Guterres made the remarks during a speech to kick of the general debate of the 73rd UN General Assembly.
"That is why I am so committed to reform, and to making the United Nations more effective in responding to the needs and aspirations of 'we the peoples,'" he said.
The UN chief warned that the people of the world and the planet itself were facing what he called "massive existential threats" that required collective action.
"There is no way forward but collective, common-sense action for the common good," he added.
The second week of the ongoing 73d UN General Assembly (UNGA73) in New York is a marathon of high-level sessions and bilateral meeting focused on the security challenges and most pressing international issues - including Iran and the future of the international nuclear deal, weapons of mass destruction, the Syria crisis and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
