Swiss To Speak Up On Food Sovereignty, Green Products, Cycle Paths At Sunday Popular Vote

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd September, 2018) Switzerland will hold a popular vote on Sunday, during which citizens are set to express their attitude to three initiatives, such as the introduction of food sovereignty proposals, standards for animal-friendly and fair food production and the creation of the national network of bicycle paths.

The initiative "For food sovereignty. Agriculture affects us all" suggests that agriculture policy switches a focus to small and family farms and promotes sustainable and gene-technology-free production. Given the offered standards, the country would have to levy customs duties on certain products or even ban their imports, which would run against the existing international agreements, according to the government.

The 'Fair Food Initiative' sets the goal to promote the environmentally- and animal-friendly and "fairly produced foodstuffs," the requirements that would be equally applicable to domestic and imported food.

The last proposal offers setting common principles concerning the network of cycle paths across the country, which may result in nationwide standards for cycle paths or accumulation of geodata for maps and apps.

The bills are subject to a popular vote since their implementation would require amending the constitution.
