Hungary, Russia to Try to Stick to Paks II NPP Project Time Frame - Budapest

Budapest and Moscow will seek to build the Hungarian Paks II nuclear power plant (NPP) in accordance with the set deadline, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th September, 2018) Budapest and Moscow will seek to build the Hungarian Paks II nuclear power plant (NPP) in accordance with the set deadline, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Tuesday.

"Of course, this raises a lot of technical issues. New ones will eventually arise as well, but we will try to adhere to the schedule," Orban said after the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The materials for a July meeting between Putin and Orban revealed that the construction of two new power units of the Paks NPP with Russia's participation was scheduled to start at the end of this year, but no later than October 27, 2019.

The Paks NPP is located some 60 miles from Budapest and three miles from the town of Paks. The station was built with the help of Soviet experts in the 1980s.

In 2014, Russia and Hungary signed an agreement on the construction of the fifth and sixth water-cooled and water-moderated VVER-1200 reactors of the NPP. Russia has pledged to loan 10 billion Euros (about $12 billion) to Hungary for this project, known as Paks II.
