Nielsen Traveling to North Carolina to See Florence Aftermath - US Homeland Security Dept.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen is traveling to the US state of North Carolina on Monday to see the aftermath of Hurricane Florence and receive updates on response efforts, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th September, 2018) Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen is traveling to the US state of North Carolina on Monday to see the aftermath of Hurricane Florence and receive updates on response efforts, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a press release.

"Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen M. Nielsen today will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina and Kinston, North Carolina following the landfall of Hurricane Florence," the release said.

The release said Nielsen is expected to meet with North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, visit an emergency operations center, and receive a briefing on response and recovery efforts.

Nielsen will also take an aerial tour to survey the damage caused by the storm, the release added.

The release also noted that since Thursday, more than 2,000 personnel and 71 teams from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) deployed to the affected states.

US President Donald Trump also declared a major disaster in both North and South Carolina over the weekend because of the storm.

Power companies in North and South Carolina are currently reporting just under 500,000 people without power. The storm has been blamed for at least 17 deaths.
