MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th September, 2018) Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of Rossiya Segodnya Information Agency and RT broadcaster, commented on Monday on her decision to transfer money to the fund that was launched to support Maria Butina, a Russian national being held in US custody on charges of espionage, noting that Russia's "wealthy sons" should be ashamed of not supporting their compatriot.

Butina's sister Marina earlier said that her family had started a fund for donations in order to get enough money for Butina's defense.

"I am transferring money to the fund launched to support Butina ... It is a shame that numerous 'wealthy sons' of the Motherland have not found a penny to save their absolutely unfairly jailed compatriot," Simonyan wrote on her Telegram account.

Butina, a recent graduate from American University and a political activist, was arrested in Washington, DC in mid-July on suspicions of acting as an agent for a foreign government. She has denied the accusations. Butina, who faces up to 15 years in jail, is now being held in a prison in the US city of Alexandria, Virginia.
