ECC approves increase in gas tariff

The gas price hike is mainly for the elite class while minimal load will be put on poor consumers.

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 17th September, 2018) The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved an increase in gas tariff on Monday.

The ECC meeting, chaired by Finance Minister Asad Umar also approved to add a new tariff slab for gas sale.

In view of the finance minister’s directives not to burden masses with the price hike, a larger increase in tariffs was placed on higher tariff slabs. The gas price hike is mainly for the elite class while minimal load will be put on poor consumers.

Asad Umar said that the poor consumers will have to pay additional 80 paisas per day.

Moreover, the import tax on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) was decreased to ten per cent. Importing the commodity is expected to decrease its price.

The ECC had on Sep 10 decided against an immediate increase in gas prices and had left the final decision to Prime Minister Imran Khan.
