Haitian Senate Votes To Approve New Government's Political Program - Reports

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th September, 2018) The upper house of the Haitian parliament on Saturday approved the political program of the newly-appointed government, presented by Prime Minister Jean Henry Ceant, thereby paving the way for the end of the political turmoil caused by the resignation of the previous cabinet amid violent protests, local media reported.

Earlier, Haitian President Jovenel Moise and the newly-appointed prime minister proposed nominees for the ministerial posts in the new cabinet, which will be able to start full-fledged work after its program gains parliamentary approval.

According to Haiti Libre media outlet, the general policy statement by the prime minister was approved by 21 to 5 votes, with 2 abstentions.

In July, Moise accepted the resignation of Jack Guy Lafontant and his government amid violent protests. The protests started after the authorities announced a reduction of fuel subsidies and the increase in fuel prices as part of an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in a bid to cope with inflation and budget deficit.

Though the authorities temporarily reversed their decision to raise the fuel prices, the unrest continued with Haitians calling on Lafontant to step down.
