MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th September, 2018) Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega said Tuesday he was ready to meet with his US counterpart Donald Trump at the upcoming UN General Assembly, despite believing that Washington was behind attempts to overthrow him.

"I consider dialogue with such a world power as the United States necessary. I say this not only on behalf of Nicaragua, but also on behalf of Latin America," Ortega said in an interview with the France 24 broadcaster.

He added that the UN General Assembly could provide such an opportunity.

However, Ortega earlier accused the United States of plotting a coup in his country. Specifically, he claimed that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) prepared and financed military groups in an attempt to overthrow him. He also did not rule out the possibility of US military intervention.

"Everything is possible when it comes to the United States," the Nicaraguan leader said.

Earlier, Ortega had already stated that he had enough evidence of the United States funding waves of violence in Nicaragua.

Turmoil erupted in Nicaragua on April 18 when people took to the streets to protest unpopular social security reforms. This led to months of demonstrations, which resulted in almost 450 people getting killed and thousands others injured. Ortega refuses to hold early elections, as required by the opposition, and calls what is happening a conspiracy against the country.
