US Mulls Beijing Sanctions Over Alleged Minority Rights Abuses In China - Reports

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th September, 2018) The Trump administration is considering economic sanctions against Beijing over the Chinese authorities allegedly practicing mass detentions of ethnic Uighurs and other minority Muslims in the country's northwest, media reported on Tuesday.

According to the New York Times, Washington might also curb the sales of US surveillance technology which is reportedly used to monitor Muslim minorities throughout northwest China.

Earlier in the month, the newspaper reported that there were hundreds of internment camps built in China for Muslim minorities over the past few years as part of the 'transformation' campaign. This is reportedly the largest arbitrary detention program launched in the country since the times of China's former chairman Mao Zedong.

Uighurs are one of China's Muslim minorities populating the country's northwest province of Xinjiang. The central authorities have long been cautious of the Uighur ethnicity due to its history of independence movement and resistance.Uighurs reportedly face baseless detentions, identity checks and biometric data collection under the pretexts of police fighting terrorism.
