Bahrain's Foreign Ministry Calls On Citizens To Leave Iraq Due To Aggravation Of Situation

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th September, 2018) Bahrain's Foreign Ministry has called on all its citizens, who are currently in Iraq, to leave the country due to aggravation of the security situation there triggered by mass protests.

"Due to the current developments in the brotherly Republic of Iraq, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls upon all citizens present in the Iraqi territories to leave immediately in order to ensure their security and safety," the ministry said on Friday.

On Friday, protesters in Basra city, which has been shaken by riots since the beginning of the week, set the local Iranian consulate on fire after torching political party and militia buildings the day before.

The previous wave of protests in Basra broke out in June before spreading to other areas of southern Iraq. Discontent was sparked by problems with electricity and water supplies that were exacerbated by scorching heat this summer. The government had formed a special commission to deal with the demands, pledging to allocate some $17 million to fixing electricity and water supplies. The promise resulted in protests subsiding before reigniting on Monday.
