Mogherini Invites Serbian, Kosovar Leaders to Hold Bilateral Meeting Ahead of UNGA

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Friday invited leaders of Serbia and Kosovo to meet ahead of the ministerial meeting of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th September, 2018) EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Friday invited leaders of Serbia and Kosovo to meet ahead of the ministerial meeting of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

The 73rd session of the UNGA will be launched on September 18.

"I will convene in Brussels the next high level session of the dialogue before the Ministerial week of the UN General Assembly to bring the two sides together to advance the work on the content of the agreement," Mogherini said, according to a statement issued by her office.

Earlier in the day, Mogherini held separate talks with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and his Kosovar counterpart Hashim Thaci.

Vucic canceled his Friday meeting with Thaci and his visit to Kosovo planned for this weekend may be threatened, too.

Marko Duric, the head of the Serbian Office for Kosovo and Metohija, reportedly cited "threats and lies from Kosovar Albanians" as reason behind the cancellation of the meeting.

Vucic left the building of the European External Action Service at about 12:30 p.m. local time, or 10:30 GMT, and headed for the airport to leave for Belgrade, the Tanjug news agency reported.

Serbia and Kosovo had reportedly been considering a land swap: Kosovo might receive the Presovo Valley with mostly Albanian population, while Serbia would have northern Kosovo with its large Serbian population.

While over 100 UN member states have officially recognized Kosovo's independence, proclaimed in 2008, Serbia alongside Russia, China, Israel and several other countries have not. The European Union persuaded Serbia to begin settlement talks with Kosovo in 2011.
