US Lawmakers Push Bill To Cooperate With Israel On Developing Directed Energy Technologies

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th September, 2018) Newly-proposed legislation introduced into the US Congress if passed would permit the Defense Department to cooperate with Israel on developing anti-missile directed energy weapons, Congressman Ted Lieu said in a press release.

"Lieu and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik introduced the bipartisan US-Israel Directed Energy Cooperation Act," the release said on Thursday. "The legislation authorizes the Department of Defense to carry out bilateral cooperation with Israel to develop directed energy capabilities that address threats to both nations."

Lieu, in the release, said directed energy technologies like high-powered lasers and microwaves will boost US capabilities to counter ballistic missiles and other major threats.

In 2017, the Defense Department issued a report to Congress recommending that the United States pursue joint collaboration with Israel on directed energy capabilities, the release said.
