US Delegation Visiting Crimea Not Afraid of Kiev's Reaction or Possible Sanctions

Members of a delegation of US social activists, who are currently visiting Crimea, say that they are not afraid of Kiev's reaction to this visit or possible introduction of some personal sanctions.

SIMFEROPOL (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th September, 2018) Members of a delegation of US social activists, who are currently visiting Crimea, say that they are not afraid of Kiev's reaction to this visit or possible introduction of some personal sanctions.

Earlier this week, four members of the US-based Center for Citizens Initiatives, a civic organization aimed at reducing tensions between nuclear superpowers, arrived in Crimea. The visit includes a tour of a Simferopol orphanage, meeting with representatives of Crimea's Parliament, and an excursion program.

"In the calls for peace sometimes you need to take risk," a delegation member and lawyer, Sylvia Demarest, said at a press conference, when asked whether she was afraid of Kiev's reaction to their visit.

Glenn Rennels, an anesthesiologist from Santa Clara, also said that he does not worry about that.

"I do not worry about what Ukraine might do. It is just too many steps down field," Rennels said.

Crimea rejoined Russia in 2014 after 97 percent of the peninsula's residents voted in favor of the move in a referendum. The reunification was not recognized by Ukraine or Western states, which subsequently imposed economic and political sanctions on Moscow. Russia has repeatedly stated that the referendum was conducted in compliance with international law.

Despite the sanctions, a number of delegations from dozens of countries, including Germany, France and Italy, have repeatedly visited Crimea.
