WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th September, 2018) The heads of the United Nations' refugee and relief efforts began a two-day mission in Afghanistan Wednesday during which they plan to meet with government officials, humanitarian partners and conflict-stricken families, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing.

"The High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock are visiting Afghanistan on a two-day mission that began today," Dujarric said on Wednesday. "They are scheduled to meet with government officials as well as donors, development and humanitarian partners, UN agencies, NGOs and families affected by the conflict."

Lowcock and Filippo are also scheduled to visit Pakistan soon on a joint mission, Dujarric said. He noted that more details of the trip will be announced on Thursday.

Last month, Guterres demanded rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian assistance to Ghazni after the Taliban said it no longer guaranteed safety of Red Cross workers in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan has long been in a state of turmoil, with the government fighting the Islamic State (IS) terror group, outlawed in Russia, and the Taliban insurgency. The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces are conducting joint counterterrorist operations across the country.
