Russian Banks Lost Over $760,000 to Attacks by Silence Hacking Group - Cybersecurity Firm

Russian banks have lost at least 52 million rubles (over $760,000) because of attacks by a hacking group called Silence, Moscow-based cybersecurity firm Group-IB said on Wednesday.

"The total amount of the funds stolen through Silence attacks in confirmed cases alone is 52 million rubles at the moment," the company said.

The company's analysts believe that at least one member of Silence is now or was in the past working for some information security firm.

The Russian-language group has targeted banks in about 25 countries, according to the cybersecurity firm.

Group-IB first reported on Silence's activities in 2016. The group targets banks through emails with malware, focusing on Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Poland, Russia, Ukraine. Banks in Central and Western Europe, in Africa and Asia also received phishing emails from the group.

In October 2017, Moscow-based cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab said that about 10 Russian banks fell victim to a Silence phishing attack. According to Group-IB, the hackers were able to steal 7 million rubles in one night.

In February this year, the group was able to steal 35 million rubles through ATMs in Russia, while in April, about 10 million rubles were stolen in one night, the analysts said.
