Moscow Opposes Poland's 'Destructive Policies' on Dismantling Soviet Monuments

Moscow strongly opposes Warsaw's policies on redrawing history and removing Soviet memorials on Polish territory, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Monday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd September, 2018) Moscow strongly opposes Warsaw's policies on redrawing history and removing Soviet memorials on Polish territory, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Monday.

In October, Poland amended its criminal code by banning communist or any other totalitarian propaganda. The amendments required the dismantlement of over 450 monuments across the country, including 230 Red Army memorials which were ordered to be removed within one year from the amendments' adoption.

"The Russian Foreign Ministry is paying attention to this issue and making a comprehensive effort to counteract Warsaw's destructive policy of redrawing 20th century history, and diminishing the role of the Red Army in defeating Nazism and liberating Europe," Zakharova said, as cited by the ministry.

The spokeswoman added that the ministry always demanded an investigation into every case of vandalism against the Soviet monuments and required Warsaw to deliver on its international commitments related to historical memorials on Polish territory.

According to the ministry, Poland leads in the number of acts of vandalism against Soviet monuments, with over 30 such instances recorded in the first six months of this year alone. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that Russophobia was being consciously, consistently, and broadly instilled as a national idea in Poland amid the monument removal campaign.
