UN Says to Expand Partnerships on Countering Terrorist Attacks Using Unconventional Arms

The United Nations will increase partnerships on countering terrorism that involves chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear weaponry (CBRN) in member states, Steven Siqueira, the Deputy Director of the UN Counter Terrorism Implementation Task Force Office said Monday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd September, 2018) The United Nations will increase partnerships on countering terrorism that involves chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear weaponry (CBRN) in member states, Steven Siqueira, the Deputy Director of the UN Counter Terrorism Implementation Task Force Office said Monday.

"This year the UN Counterterrorism Center and the capacity building arm of the UN OCT [UN Office of Counter-Terrorism] is working to expand partnerships in the field of countering terrorism, involving weapons of mass destruction and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons and is developing a program to support member states to build capacity in areas of border and export control, protection of materials, protection of facilities and critical infrastructure as well as incident response and crisis management," Siqueira said at a conference on countering arms flows to terrorists.

Siqueira added that the program would prevent terrorist organizations from gaining access to the CBRN weapons.

"This program will seek to enhance capacities of member states, international organizations, and UN entities to prevent terrorist organizations from accessing and using weapons of mass destruction or chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear materials," Siqueira said.

A conference titled "Countering Illicit Arms Trafficking in the Context of Fighting International Terrorism" is taking place in Russia's capital, Moscow, on 3-4 September. The conference is being attended by representatives from 21 countries, along with representatives from Russia's Federal Security Service, Foreign Intelligence Service, and other government bodies and agencies.
