On Saturday, the Russian Defense Ministry's spokesman, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, said that terrorists of the Tahrir al-Sham group (affiliated with the Jabhat Nusra terror organization, banned in Russia) were preparing a provocation in Syria's western Idlib province to accuse Syrian government forces of using chemical weapons against civilians.
"We took note of the reports in question, including information from the Russian side that a chemical weapons incident may occur in the Syrian province of Idlib ... We oppose the use of chemical weapons by any state, individual or organization under any pretext," Hua told a briefing.
The spokeswoman added that China was calling on all parties to join forces to fight terrorism in Syria and find a political resolution to the crisis.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Thursday that Moscow had warned the West to avoid any provocative action in the Idlib area.
