Number of Election Meddling Attempts Growing in Sweden Ahead of Vote - Security Service

A growing number of attempts to meddle in Sweden's internal affairs and to undermine the Swedish citizens' confidence in the election process is being recorded in the country ahead of the vote to elect the members of the parliament, the Swedish Security Service (Sapo) said on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th August, 2018) A growing number of attempts to meddle in Sweden's internal affairs and to undermine the Swedish citizens' confidence in the election process is being recorded in the country ahead of the vote to elect the members of the parliament, the Swedish Security Service (Sapo) said on Thursday.

"We are seeing an increase in activities compared to the 2014 election and also compared to earlier this year. We have also seen that in international news reporting about conditions in Sweden, the country is portrayed as being in chaos," Sapo Deputy Department head Linda Escar was quoted as saying by Radio Sweden.

Escar added that the Sapo had registered the cases of misinformation dissemination in social media through hijacked or fake accounts.

She indicated that the investigation of such malign activities in the internet space was difficult and required a lot of time, adding that the Sapo did not know so far what organizations were behind such actions.

On September 9, Sweden will hold general election to elect 349 members of the country's unicameral parliament. The majority of parliamentary seats currently belongs to the Swedish Social Democratic Party, whose leader Stefan Lofven has been the parliament's head since 2014.
