Total of 14,000 Schools Ready to Receive 4Mln Students in Syria - Education Ministry

A total of 14,000 educational institutions across Syria are prepared to receive as many as 4 million students for the upcoming start to the new school year, Syrian Assistant Minister of Education Dr. Saeed Khorasani said on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th August, 2018) A total of 14,000 educational institutions across Syria are prepared to receive as many as 4 million students for the upcoming start to the new school year, Syrian Assistant Minister of Education Dr. Saeed Khorasani said on Thursday.

"One of the most important tasks that our office faces is to complete the educational institutions' preparations for the beginning of the new school year. A total of 14,000 schools are currently ready to receive students," Khorasani said at a joint session of the Russian and the Syrian interdepartmental coordination headquarters on the return of refugees to Syria.

He went on to say that the schools were ready to receive 4 million students.

"In the period of war, 5,000 schools have been rebuilt, including 785 since the beginning of this year, and 422 in the past two months," Khorasani said, adding that Syrian students largely contributed to restoration work.

He added that students in the southwestern province of Damascus had repaired six schools with their own hands.

Syrian authorities have also continued encouraging Syrians with professional qualifications in education to return home from abroad. According to Khorasani, 30,000 teachers have been appointed since the beginning of 2018.

Khorasani concluded that the normal operation of the country's educational system was one of the key factors inspiring Syrians, who have fled their country, to repatriate.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the government forces fighting against numerous opposition groups and terrorist organizations. Scores of people have fled the country as a result. However, as the government has recently regained control over vast territories of the country that had been seized by terrorists, refugees have begun repatriating. According to the recent estimates of Russian National Defense Control Center, a total of 300,000 Syrian refugees and another 1.2 million internally displaced persons have returned home over the past 2.5 years.
