Riga's Opposition Lawmakers Suggest Renaming Street After Late US Senator McCain

RIGA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th August, 2018) Opposition lawmakers of the Riga's city legislature suggested in a letter to the Latvian capital's Mayor Nils Usakovs that one of the city's streets should be renamed after late US Senator John McCain.

"We suggest considering the issue of naming one of Riga's streets after senator McCain," the text of the letter, published on Latvian politician Janis Bordans' Facebook page, read.

Bordans characterized McCain in his social media post as a US politician who had repeatedly supported Baltic states and contributed to Latvian security.

Usakovs has not yet commented on the request.

McCain died of brain cancer on Saturday. After his death, politicians both inside and outside the United States have suggested that certain locations should be renamed after the politician.

Earlier on Wednesday, media reported that the recently completed new headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Brussels should be named after McCain as per a request of a British lawmaker.
