WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th August, 2018) China is getting closer to destroying US alliances in the Indo-Pacific by making defense commitments in the region too expensive, Senator Marco Rubio said in a statement on Wednesday.
"On China it's time to wake up! It's not just trade the(y) threaten us with. They are on the verge of achieving their goal of destroying our alliances in the Indo-Pacific by making ... our defense commitments too costly to keep," Rubio said in a Twitter statement.
Included in Rubio's message was a link to a report in The New York Times which said a modernization program focused on China's naval and missile forces is shifting the balance of power in the Pacific.
The report quoted the new commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, Admiral Philip Davidson, who said during his confirmation hearing in April that China is able to control the South China Sea in "all scenarios short of war with the United States."
The Chinese Navy became the largest in the world last year, with more ships and submarines than the United States, the report added.
