Resumption of Joint South Korea-US Military Drills Not Discussed Yet - Official

Seoul and Washington have not held talks over resuming joint military drills, an official from South Korea's presidential office said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th August, 2018) Seoul and Washington have not held talks over resuming joint military drills, an official from South Korea's presidential office said Wednesday.

On Tuesday, US Secretary of Defense James Mattis said that there were no plans to suspend any future military exercises with South Korea as part of the diplomatic work being done to secure North Korea's cooperation in denuclearization. He explained that the US military only suspended several of the largest exercises, but that there were constantly smaller exercises taking place on the Korean Peninsula.

"As of now, the issue has not been discussed between South Korea and the United States," Kim Eui-kyeom said, as quoted by Yonhap news agency.

He added that the decision to suspend joint exercises only included those set for the year.

The situation on the Korean Peninsula has significantly improved over the last months, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un having held several rounds of talks with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in and a summit with US President Donald Trump in Singapore. During the June 12 summit, Kim and Trump reached an agreement that required Pyongyang to denuclearize in exchange for a freeze on the US-South Korean military drills and eventual sanctions relief.
