Kazakhstan Hopes for Denuclearization of Korean Peninsula, Stands Ready to Help - Astana

Kazakhstan hopes that the rapprochement of South Korea and North Korea will lead to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and is prepared to support this process, Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov said on Wednesday.

ASTANA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th August, 2018) Kazakhstan hopes that the rapprochement of South Korea and North Korea will lead to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and is prepared to support this process, Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov said on Wednesday.

Abdrakhmanov spoke at the international Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CBTO) conference dubbed Remembering the Past, Looking Forward to the Future in Astana.

"We are closely monitoring the latest developments related to the Korean Peninsula that started at the inter-Korean summit and the first meeting between the United States and North Korea. I hope that these events can lead to complete denuclearization of the peninsula," Abdrakhmanov said.

The Kazakh minister stressed that Astana stood ready to provide its support bearing in mind its "unique experience of giving up nuclear weapons" that were inherited following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

On June 12, US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met in Singapore where they agreed to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Kim also confirmed his desire to denuclearize and signed a corresponding agreement with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the inter-Korean summit in late April.
