Beijing Expresses Hope North Korea,US To Continue Dialogue Following Cancellation Of Talks

BEIJING (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th August, 2018) China called on North Korea and the United States to continue dialogue on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula after US State Secretary Mike Pompeo canceled his trip to Pyongyang, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a position paper for the upcoming UN General Assembly session.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump said that he had told his top diplomat to call off his trip to North Korea due to insufficient progress in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

China hopes to see and supports closer dialogue and contacts among relevant parties to further demonstrate good will and ease tensions. China hopes that the US and the DPRK [the Democratic People's Republic of Korea] continue to actively engage in interactions, meet each other half way, and implement the consensus reached by the two leaders at their summit, the ministry said late on Tuesday.

The situation on the Korean Peninsula has significantly improved over the last months, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un having held several rounds of talks with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in and a summit with Trump in Singapore. During the June 12 summit, Kim and Trump reached an agreement that required Pyongyang to denuclearize in exchange for a freeze on the US-South Korean military drills and eventual sanctions relief.
