US Senate Republicans to See if Canada Joins New Trade Deal Before Acting - McConnell

The US Senate will wait to see if Canada is going to join the new trade agreement with Mexico before considering verifying it, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told a weekly press conference on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th August, 2018) The US Senate will wait to see if Canada is going to join the new trade agreement with Mexico before considering verifying it, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told a weekly press conference on Tuesday.

"We are probably going to wait and see whether this becomes a Canadian deal as well," McConnell said.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States reached a preliminary trade deal with Mexico to replace the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

McConnell said the initial reaction in his home state of Kentucky was positive and there was a palpable sense of relief among most of his Republican colleagues in the Senate.

On Monday, the Office of the US Trade Representative said the new trade deal requires that 75 percent of auto content be made in the United States and Mexico, among other conditions. An administration official told reporters the deal would last 16-years with periodic reviews to extend.
