Rallies in Germany's Chemnitz Leave 20 People Injured - Saxonian Police

Twenty people were injured in protest rallies in the city of Chemnitz, in Germany's Saxonia, held over a killing of a man on the weekend, the regional police said Tuesday.

"During the two rallies, altercations took place, which, according to the preliminary data, left 18 rally participants and two police officers injured," the police said in a press release.

According to the law enforcement, 591 police officers were present to ensure security in Chemnitz on Monday, during the two rallies.

About 6,000 people attended a rally organized by Pro Chemnitz activists and 1,500 were gathered by The Left.

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer on Monday offered the support of the Federal police to the Saxonian authorities.

"The police in Saxony are in a difficult situation. As soon as we receive a request from them, the state is ready to offer its support in what concerns police work," Seehofer said.

The minister offered his condolences to the family of the victim.

"I deeply regret this death. The worry of the population over this is understandable. But I would like to make it clear that calls for violence or statements followed by violence cannot be justified under any circumstances," Seehofer said.

A 35-year old German national was killed in a fight on Sunday. The police have detained two suspects, one is a Syrian national, and another one is an Iraqi citizen. A local court has approved their arrest.
