Jailed Russian Pilot Yaroshenko Says Suffers From Being Unable to Help Family

Russian national Konstantin Yaroshenko, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence in a jail in the US state of Connecticut, said on Monday that he suffered from not being able to help his wife and daughter.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th August, 2018) Russian national Konstantin Yaroshenko, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence in a jail in the US state of Connecticut, said on Monday that he suffered from not being able to help his wife and daughter.

Yaroshenko has met with his family for the first time in seven years on Friday.

"Most of all I am sorry for my [wife] Vika who has to deal with all the difficulties [on her own]. I am sorry that I cannot be together with my [daughter] Katya ... I suffer great pain from not being able to help my girls," Yaroshenko said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.

The pilot added he would seek his case to be considered by the UN Security Council, which could conduct an investigation into his "abduction, torture, fabrication of the case, unlawful conviction, imprisonment and discrimination."

Yaroshenko was captured in Liberia in 2010 and sentenced the following year in the United States to 20 years on charges of conspiring to import drugs. In 2016, the New York Court of Appeals refused to revise Yaroshenko's sentence.

In April, the Russian Embassy in the United States voiced concerns about reports that the pilot was enduring abuse in prison and called on the prison's administration to stop violating his fundamental rights.

Last June, the US authorities transferred Yaroshenko from the Fort Dix prison in New Jersey to the Danbury correctional facility in Connecticut. The pilot said the staff at the Danbury prison have treated him nicely but the conditions were worse than at the Fort Dix facility. Yaroshenko complained about being in a cramped cell shared by 120 inmates, the Russian Consulate General said.
