UAE Press: Justice remains elusive for Rohingya

A year after Myanmar’s military and Buddhist mobs launched waves of merciless attacks, killing thousands and emptying villages, the scars and worries of the Rohingya Muslims linger and justice remains elusive for them, commented a UAE daily.

ABU DHABI, (Pakistan Point News - 27th Aug, 2018) A year after Myanmar’s military and Buddhist mobs launched waves of merciless attacks, killing thousands and emptying villages, the scars and worries of the Rohingya Muslims linger and justice remains elusive for them, commented a UAE daily.

"August 25 last year proved to be a Black Day for the victims when the anti-Rohingya violence reached its peak," said The Gulf Today in an editorial on Monday.

The paper continued, "Rohingya who crossed the border to Bangladesh mention about killings, rapes and arson carried out by security forces, which UN officials agree seem to be a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.

"However, what is increasingly clear is that the Myanmar government has shown little interest in bringing those responsible for such gross violations of human rights to justice. The Rohingya have suffered a pattern of persecution over decades, lacking even the most basic human rights, starting with citizenship, in their native Myanmar.

"Though Myanmar authorities have made an agreement with Bangladesh to repatriate refugees, only a handful have gone back. It is disappointing that Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi is shunting the ball in Bangladesh court by stating that it is up to Bangladesh "to decide how quickly" repatriation of the refugees can be accomplished.

"Rohingya leaders have repeatedly stated that the exiles would not return home unless their safety was guaranteed and such a stance is totally justified.

"The UAE, on its part, has been doing its best to help alleviate the suffering of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

"The Sheikha Fatima Global Humanitarian Campaign has succeeded in attracting young doctors to help the refugees by providing the best diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive services to children and women.

"The only way forward is for Myanmar to pave the way for a conducive environment allowing for the voluntary, safe and dignified return of the people to their place of origin.

"What the Rohingya are asking for is justice for their dead relatives and neighbours. Every human being on earth deserves the right to justice.

"The international community should exhibit no laxity when it comes to investigating the crimes against the Rohingya people. They have suffered for too long and for absolutely no mistake of theirs," concluded the Sharjah-based daily.
