Death Toll In Flood-Affected India's Western Kerala State Reaches 445 - Reports

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th August, 2018) The number of people who have died as a result of the heavy floods in the western Indian state of Kerala has reached 445, media reported on Sunday.

According to the Al Jazeera news broadcaster, 28 new bodies were discovered on Sunday putting the death toll close to 450.

The worst floods that have been recorded in India in over a century have been devastating the region since August 8 following the beginning of the monsoon season in June.

Earlier in August, Kerala state's Chief Minister's Office said that 80 dams had been opened to lower the water levels, adding that over 220,000 people were seeking shelter in relief camps.

According to the country's Defense Ministry, the army is helping to deal with the disaster, evacuating residents from the affected areas and erecting temporary footbridges to regain access to hard-to-reach villages.
