Syrian Presidents Visit to South Ossetia Being Worked on - South Ossetian Leader

Syrian President Bashar Assad's trip to South Ossetia is being worked out, president of the partially-recognized state, Anatoly Bibilov, said Saturday

TSKHINVALI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th August, 2018) Syrian President Bashar Assad's trip to South Ossetia is being worked out, president of the partially-recognized state, Anatoly Bibilov, said Saturday.

"The visit is being worked on," Bibilov told a press conference in Tskhinvali.

The date of Assads trip to South Ossetia would be communicated to the public via the media, Bibilov pointed out, also adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to visit the country at some point in the future.

"Everyone asks me if Vladimir Vladimirovich [Putin] will visit Tskhinval on August 26. My answer is Vladimir Vladimirovich will visit Tskhinval, but not on [August] 26. ... But he will come visit," Bibilov pointed out.

Sunday will mark the 10th anniversary of Russia's recognition of South Ossetia's independence. Putin, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and other Russian officials have been invited to visit the country to participate in the celebrations.

In late May, Syria recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

In July, the foreign ministers of Syria and South Ossetia signed an agreement on establishing diplomatic relations. Soon afterward, Bibilov visited the middle Eastern country and held a meeting with Assad there.

South Ossetia and Abkhazia proclaimed their independence from Georgia back in the 1990s. Russia recognized their independence after Moscow's military conflict with Tbilisi in 2008.
