UN Condemns Killing Of Peacekeeper In Central African Republic

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th August, 2018) The UN chief on Friday condemned the death of a Burundian peacekeeper in an attack by presumed Christian rebels in the Central African Republic, warning this could be considered a war crime.

"The Secretary-General recalls that intentionally directing attacks against United Nations peacekeepers may constitute a war crime and that sanctions can be applied against the perpetrators," his spokesman said.

The peacekeeper with the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission (MINUSCA) was killed on Thursday, Stephane Dujarric said. The UN chief called on car authorities to probe the killing and punish those responsible.

The Central African Republic has seen decades of unrest, leading to Muslim seleka rebels ousting the president in 2013. This gave rise to so-called anti-balaka militancy, whose stated goal was to protect Christians.
