Ecuador Halts Passport Entry Rule For Venezuelans

QUITO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th August, 2018) An Ecuadorean judge on Friday repealed a government requirement that Venezuelans present passports to enter the country, the Public Defenders Office said.

"This is a historic triumph for justice and for human rights," Public Defender Ernesto Pazmino said, calling the ruling a "humanitarian response to migration."

Venezuelans were able to cross into Ecuador with a national ID before an exodus caused by a poor state of Venezuelan economy prompted authorities to bring back passport controls.

Earlier in the day, Ecuador reportedly opened humanitarian corridors for Venezuelans fleeing to Peru and Colombia to escape chronic shortages of food, medicine and basic commodities in their impoverished home country.
