Tech Giants Join DHS In Updating US States Officials On Foreign Election Meddling

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th August, 2018) The Department of Homeland Security said in a press release on Friday that microsoft and Facebook have joined it in briefing US states officials on foreign election meddling operations.

"Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was joined by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Facebook, and Microsoft to host a briefing for the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) and the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED) on recent actions taken by both companies to combat foreign threats," the release said.

The briefing is the second one in recent weeks hosted by the DHS and Facebook to share information on actions taken to combat malicious interference operations.

The briefing provides an opportunity for representatives of the private sector and public officials to share information and inform actions being taken to combat threats to US elections, the release said.

On Thursday, Google announced it has removed 58 accounts linked to an alleged influence operation by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.

Twitter sad it removed on Tuesday more than 280 accounts for coordinated manipulation, including a number that originated from Iran.

Facebook announced it removed more than 650 pages and accounts for inauthentic behavior that can be linked to Iran and other pages linked to Russia.

Russian officials have repeatedly denied meddling in the US political system saying such allegations have been invented to excuse the election loss of a presidential candidate as well as deflect public opinion from actual instances of election fraud, corruption and other pressing issues.
