MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th August, 2018) The government of Ecuador has announced opening of a humanitarian corridor for Venezuelans who want to reach Colombia and Peru via Ecuadorean territory, local media reported on Friday.
Earlier on Thursday, UN High Commissioner for Refugees chief Filippo Grandi appealed for additional support from the international community for the countries that are welcoming refugees from Venezuela.
Ecuadorean Interior Minister Mauro Toscanini said that the Venezuelans who wanted to use the corridor would be transported by bus upon providing identification documents, the Universo media outlet reported.
Shortages of food and medicine, exacerbated by hyperinflation, have forced more than a million Venezuelans to flee to neighboring Colombia and Peru in recent months.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has refused most international aid, claiming outside powers are bent on removing his government from power.
