UNICEF Urges Warring Parties In Yemen To End Conflict Amid Airstrikes Killing Children

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th August, 2018) The UN Childrens Fund (UNICEF) is calling on the warring parties to stop the Yemen conflict after another deadly attack on camp for displayed people of which the vast majority of casualties were children, Executive Director Henrietta Fore said in a statement on Friday.

"I - once again - call for the warring parties, those who have influence over them, the UN Security Council and the international community to take action and end this conflict once and for all," Fore said. "The lives of thousands of vulnerable children across Yemen must be a priority for all."

On Thursday, local media reported that airstrikes carried out by the Saudi-led coalition in the port of Al Hudaydah hit a convoy of internally displaced people killing at least 31 people of which 26 children.

Fore said she had hoped the outrage that followed a previous deadly airstrike in Saada two weeks ago would be a turning point in the conflict.

"Yesterdays reported attacks in Ad-Durayhimi, killing 26 children, indicate that it was not," Fore said.

Earlier in the month, a Saudi-led coalition airstrike in Yemens northern province of Saada hit a bus carrying children from a summer camp, killing 50 people and injuring 77 others, the majority of which were minors.

Yemen has been engulfed in an armed conflict between the government forces led by President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and the Houthi movement. The Saudi-led coalition of mostly Persian Gulf nations has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi's request since March 2015.

The situation in Yemen has significantly deteriorated since June, when the government forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition launched an offensive to seize the port of Al Hudaydah. The operation continues despite the United Nations warnings of a possible humanitarian catastrophe.
