MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th August, 2018) Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova blasted on Friday US attempts to distort the content of a recent phone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
"Once again, we have to pay attention to the free interpretation by the US side of the content of contacts by high-ranking Russian and US representatives. H.Nauert's statements are untrue, M. Pompeo did not make such addresses," Zakharova said in response to State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert saying Pompeo asked Lavrov by phone to back, through the OPCW, efforts to hold the Syrian authorities accountable for chemical weapons use.
"We regard such a distorted presentation of the contents of the conversation between the US and Russian top diplomats as an attempt by Washington to use bilateral dialogue on the Syrian conflict to promote its own political agenda both in relation to Syria and, more broadly, within the framework of the OPCW," she said.
Zakharova said Moscow hopes the US side will be more careful in comments on contacts between top diplomats.
