Newly-Appointed Russian Ambassador To Belarus Given 'Special' Status - Kremlin Spokesman

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th August, 2018) Mikhail Babich, the newly-appointed Russian Ambassador to Belarus, has a special status because he will be working in what Russia considers a "special" country, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

Earlier in the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Babich, former plenipotentiary envoy to Russia's Volga Federal District, as the country's new ambassador to Belarus, and as his special representative for trade and economic cooperation with the country.

"Today, a decree was signed ordering that Babich be appointed as our ambassador to Belarus with a status as the president's special representative for trade and economic cooperation with Belarus. This is a special status, this is a special ambassador to a country that is special for us. This is why Babich was given a special status: due to the importance that the president attaches to the development of the relations and the trade and economic cooperation with the union state of Belarus," Peskov told reporters.

Babich's appointment took place two days after Putin met with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko in the Russian resort city of Sochi.
