Russian Embassy In Madrid Urges Spanish Media To Be Fair Amid Microsoft Claims On Meddling

MADRID (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th August, 2018) The Russian Embassy in Madrid called on the Spanish media to be objective in their reporting of news related to Microsoft's recent accusations toward Moscow of its alleged malign cyberactivity ahead of the US midterm elections.

The embassy's comment was prompted by a recent article dubbed "Microsoft and Russian Cyberattacks" in Catalan La Vanguardia newspaper which reported on Microsoft's claims that Russia allegedly could use cyberattacks to influence the US midterms in November. Earlier this week, microsoft said that its Digital Crimes Unit had disrupted six domains created by the Fancy Bears hack team, allegedly tied to the Russian government, which could have been used for the malign cyberactivity to rig the midterms.

"It is sad that the 'witch hunt' which has engulfed Washington is so quickly spreading across the world. Whether to join it or not each decides for himself. But we hope that responsible media would adhere to the principles of unbiased and objective investigation," the embassy said in a statement.

The embassy added that it was not the first time when media linked any incident of malign cyberactivity to Moscow without any proof with a single aim of entertaining its readers.

The Fancy Bear group is thought by numerous countries to be linked to Russia, but these claims have never been proven by concrete evidence. The group is thought to have carried out cyberattacks in France, Germany and the United States and is best known for its attacks on the US Democratic National Committee and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Moscow has repeatedly refuted any claims on having links to cyberactors and attempting to influence domestic affairs of sovereign states as groundless.
