UN Calls For Increase In International Engagement In Venezuelan Refugee Crisis - Spokesman

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd August, 2018) The United Nations calls on the international community to engage more in response to plans drafted by states that accept refugees from Venezuela, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a news briefing on Thursday.

"The current situation underlines the urgent need to increase international engagement and solidarity and support of the governments' response plans," Dujarric told reporters.

Earlier on Thursday, UN High Commissioner for Refugees chief Filippo Grandi appealed for additional support from the international community for the countries that are welcoming refugees from Venezuela.

Dujarric explained the refugee flow has been consistent as more than one million people have left the country over the last three years.

While nearly 90 percent of Venezuelan refugees settle in countries in South America, new passport and border entry requirements in Equador and Peru have been a cause of concern for the United Nations, Dujarric added.

Venezuelans have been able to cross into Ecuador by presenting national identification documents. Thousands of Venezuelans have also started moving to Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Chile and Ecuador.
